The City at Night

The City at Night

Saturday 20 April
Monseigneur Charbonneau - 7pm - 2 Hours
Joshua Renaud
Many people don't think about nighttime being a good time to do photography since there's a lack of light. However, armed with knowledge about your camera's settings and the properties of light, nighttime photography can be a lot of fun.

In this meetup, you'll learn about the best camera settings for nighttime photography. We'll also explore the kinds of light available to us and how to use that light to make some awesome photos. As always, there are exercises that will help you put your new knowledge to work.

Street Photography

Saturday 18 May
Little Italy district - 10am - 2 Hours
Joshua Renaud
People, cafes, vendors, street merchants, buskers, historic buildings, art installations and much more. The power of observation underpins the art of great street photography. Learning to "see" interesting detail is a practised skill and we introduce you to easy methods that will open your photographer's eye and expose you to a world that is alive with detail. The most rewarding part of the class is learning how to approach interesting people and have them willingly pose for you.

We will also go over settings, focusing techniques and lens choices common to street photography to help us capture those random chance encounters.

Architecture Photography

Architecture Photography

Saturday 01 June
Esplanade Place Ville Marie - 1pm - 2 Hours
Joshua Renaud
Architectural photography can be a great way of exploring and documenting a city, whether it's your home or on holiday. Its about capturing not only the design and accurate representation of a building, but to have the shots be aesthetically pleasing to the viewer's eye. An architectural photographer makes pictures, not takes pictures.

In this session, we will be covering how to better understand Architecture photography and we'll be looking at ways to take some impressive shots and the camera settings to use.

Industrial Landscape Photography

Industrial Landscape Photography

Saturday 22 June
Old Port of Montréal - 1pm - 2 Hours
Joshua Renaud
We will be starting with an overview of landscape photography technique, how to decide what to take a picture of and how to compose shots, we will then move into settings and more technical challenges to get an idea of when the camera behaves best for landscapes.

You can use buildings and other man-made structures compositionally in the same way other landscape photographers use trees and rolling hills. Wind farms, harbours, cement works, power stations, quarries, pylons and building sites are just a few of the industrial landscapes you can photograph.

This was a great workshop for beginners. There was a perfect balance of theory and practice. You learn, and then you get to go out there and shoot. Josh is great at breaking the complicated workings of a camera down into manageable bits. He also gives you one-on-one tips as you shoot. Highly recommended!

Joshua has been photographing for 10 years. He fell in love with photography at university, so much so that he decided to get a degree in photo!

He absolutely loves helping people how to use their cameras more effectively and helping them develop a better eye so as to take better photos. He personally loves taking pictures of architecture, trees, and sublime sunlight. Josh is currently exploring themes of memory, nostalgia, home, inside vs. outside space, and time.

Joshua Renaud is available for private bookings

Most Tuesday afternoons, and potentially some Fridays and Saturdays, but my schedule changes weekly.

For as long as I can remember, I've immersed myself in some form of art; whether banging out the rhythms I feel inside out on drums, composing music to share my thoughts or writing film scripts to share my ideas, making art has been my entire life. I went into shooting my first wedding by complete accident. Way back when, a friend of mine saw that I was dabbling in photography and he asked me if I'd shoot his wedding.

I said yes and ended up loving everything about it! It's now 15 years later and I still love it! The challenge of creating in fast-paced environments, coming up with creative angles & adapting new lighting techniques -not to mention- figuring out unique ways to tell the story of each wedding, have turned this job into my calling! After years of practicing this art, I strive to light with purpose, compose with ambition and capture with intent

Vinay Dhalla is available for private bookings

I am available for private bookings/tutoring, weddings, portraits and events.

Available throughout the week, 9am to 6pm.
Available most weekends for the winter season ( spring is when the wedding season starts off)

Infrared film and more recently IR digital photography has been a passion of mine since attending the Haliburton Fine Arts program in 2005. In 2021, I had one of my DSLRs converted to 720nm IR and embarked on an IR journey. This photo was taken along a part of the St Lawrence in south-western Quebec at mid-day in full sun. White balance is critical for effective editing. To colourize, I used channel swapping in Adobe PS. Gear: Nikon D90 Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 (EXIF: f/10, 1/125 sec ISO 200
