Street Photography

Street Photography

Saturday 13 January
Esplanade Place Ville Marie - 1pm - 2 Hours
Joshua Renaud
People, cafes, vendors, street merchants, buskers, historic buildings, art installations and much more. The power of observation underpins the art of great street photography. Learning to "see" interesting detail is a practised skill and we introduce you to easy methods that will open your photographer's eye and expose you to a world that is alive with detail. The most rewarding part of the class is learning how to approach interesting people and have them willingly pose for you.

We will also go over settings, focusing techniques and lens choices common to street photography to help us capture those random chance encounters.

Industrial Landscape Photography

Industrial Landscape Photography

Sunday 04 February
Old Port of Montréal - 1pm - 2 Hours
Joshua Renaud
We will be starting with an overview of landscape photography technique, how to decide what to take a picture of and how to compose shots, we will then move into settings and more technical challenges to get an idea of when the camera behaves best for landscapes.

You can use buildings and other man-made structures compositionally in the same way other landscape photographers use trees and rolling hills. Wind farms, harbours, cement works, power stations, quarries, pylons and building sites are just a few of the industrial landscapes you can photograph.

Urban Industrial Photo Walk

Urban Industrial Photo Walk

Saturday 24 February
Montréal's Southwest borough - 1pm - 2 Hours
Joshua Renaud
This class will be an exciting split between exploring one location and walking! We'll start by spending half the class wandering the farmer stalls of Marche Atwater. For the second portion of the class, we'll walk up towards Griffintown along the canal. This will give us a super interesting contrast between showcasing local producers and the industrial landscape surrounding them.

The City at Night

Saturday 30 March
Monseigneur Charbonneau - 7pm - 2 Hours

Many people don't think about nighttime being a good time to do photography since there's a lack of light. However, armed with knowledge about your camera's settings and the properties of light, nighttime photography can be a lot of fun.

In this meetup, you'll learn about the best camera settings for nighttime photography. We'll also explore the kinds of light available to us and how to use that light to make some awesome photos. As always, there are exercises that will help you put your new knowledge to work.

Come along to our photo sessions to dust off your camera and get snap-happy with a professional photography instructor.

Brush up on your camera skills and learn new photography techniques whilst on a photo walk class with other local keen photographers!

We run two hour photography sessions based on a photography theme/technique/style and they take place in various locations in Montreal.

  • New to photography? We also run a popular 3 hour Beginners Guide to Photography Class once a month. And once in a while we will run special niche 3 hour classes, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next on is!

  • Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

  • What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

The meeting point and full details for the day are sent in the booking confirmation email to the email address you provide at time of booking.

Josh was great!! Place had to be changed at the last minute but all was good in the end. Josh sent me where to park so I was less stressed. I definitely would have enjoyed Botanical Gardens more as I found I ran out of things to photograph plus I live right next to a beautiful park. I did enjoy chatting with everyone and meeting new people.

Always fun to get out on the street with Joshua! Going through examples of famous street photographers at the beginning was very interesting, and also forces us to think about what we are looking for when taking our camera on the street. Thanks!

I loved it. I liked the information given by Joshua. It will help me to capture more beautiful photos on my Italian trip. I would make sure that when you sent reminders of the event that you emphasize the importance of being on time as there were three students waiting for one. I also appreciate that Joshua sent us all the info after the class - I love it. I would definitely take another class. Joshua shares his knowledge with us, answered our questions with important and interesting information. He is a great teacher. Thank you Joshua and also Geraldine who accommodated graciously my 201cchanging 201c schedule.

    Joshua Renaud
Joshua has been photographing for 10 years. He fell in love with photography at university, so much so that he decided to get a degree in photo!

He absolutely loves helping people how to use their cameras more effectively and helping them develop a better eye so as to take better photos. He personally loves taking pictures of architecture, trees, and sublime sunlight. Josh is currently exploring themes of memory, nostalgia, home, inside vs. outside space, and time.

Joshua Renaud is available for private bookings

Most Tuesday afternoons, and potentially some Fridays and Saturdays, but my schedule changes weekly.

I love the lighting in this metro station, with its big skylights contrasting with the track's darkness. It creates such a dramatic atmosphere, especially early in the morning, when commuters go from light to darkness in one flight of stairs.
