The City at Night

Saturday 11 January
Monseigneur Charbonneau - 5pm - 2 Hours
Joshua Renaud
Many people don't think about nighttime being a good time to do photography since there's a lack of light. However, armed with knowledge about your camera's settings and the properties of light, nighttime photography can be a lot of fun.

In this meetup, you'll learn about the best camera settings for nighttime photography. We'll also explore the kinds of light available to us and how to use that light to make some awesome photos. As always, there are exercises that will help you put your new knowledge to work.

ABOUT MONTREAL
PHOTOGRAPHY
GROUP
Come along to our photo sessions to dust off your camera and get snap-happy with a professional photography instructor.

Brush up on your camera skills and learn new photography techniques whilst on a photo walk class with other local keen photographers!

We run two hour photography sessions based on a photography theme/technique/style and they take place in various locations in Montreal.

  • New to photography? We also run a popular 3 hour Beginners Guide to Photography Class once a month. And once in a while we will run special niche 3 hour classes, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next on is!

  • Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

  • What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

The meeting point and full details for the day are sent in the booking confirmation email to the email address you provide at time of booking.

Join the Montreal Photography Group on Facebook to share your photos after the session.

I think it is an excellent opportunity to connect with people who have the same interest, the instructions and advice of our host were excellent, the guidelines were clear and pertinent to awaken the creativity that street photography demanded. I must also say that his excitement and love for photography is contagious.

Taken on a bike stroll in Sept 2017. At the time I was living in Hochelaga neighbourhood and used to bike to Jacques Drapeau Park whenever I had the chance. One one of these strolls I made note of interesting spots to photograph and needless to say, the Jacques Cartier Bridge offers plenty of opportunities. This picture in particular wasn't planned per se - the spot I had chosen was to capture the Sun dial over the pointy roof of a church. While I was waiting for the dial to reach the exact s

I am a flight attendant and on every trip I always have my camera with me. Having many hours of free time to wander and visit the city I am in is the perfect excuse to go out and shoot life all around the world. This shot was taken at a major European bank headquarter in Brussels. I had seen pictures of the beautiful architecture and I knew I had to go see it for myself. The facade is made of these tall and impressive white columns. That day was a beautiful sunny day in September 2023, and

I setup bird feeders at home including a hummingbird feeder. They are super active and are use to me being close to them so I grabbed my Canon R5 with my Canon 70-200mm f2.8 lens and placed myself within 8 feet from the feeder rendering great closeup shots while they feed and the late afternoon sun gives this Rufous hummingbird that beautiful glow

I attended the Intro to Astrophotography class on September 28th. I used some old equipment by today's standard.Equipment and settings: Canon 300D18-55mm kit lensFocal Length - 18mmShutter Speed - 30 secondsAperture - f/3.5ISO - 1600In post-processing, I raised the exposure, applied less contrast, raised the highlights and whites, increased texture and clarity, and used dehaze and denoise to remove a lot of the noise present with older entry-level gear.
